An orange cat, a bag of magic marbles, an enchanted boat, and a woman with no memory of how she got there.
This story blends magic, political conflict, and a young girl's desire to break free of convention, especially when that convention dictates that she let go of what she cares about most.
The Convenient Curse is endearing, whimsical and can sometimes just be straight up camp, with how the magic system works and how they wield magic to get out of tricky situations. The characters are lovable and I would ride or die for Max.
While I struggled a bit with the pacing of the story, it still hits the emotional points we need.
The ending also was really cute and I appreciated it.
It's a fun, cozy read filled with magic, whimsy, and orange cat shenanigans.
Thank you to Book Sirens for an advanced copy of this book

Meera Chopra is a professor specialising in studying about Indians in the United Kingdom during the Victorian Era. Unfortunately, not all of her peers think that what she's studying is actually worth anything. After an upsetting encounter with a fellow scholar belittling her studies at a Victorian-themed costume party, Meera storms out to get herself some air, and unfortunately falls down and hits her head.
She wakes up and finds herself in history, alive and in the flesh, face to face with Queen Victoria. Now she's staring at the facts face-to-face, finding concrete proof of her studies, and is overall validated in her research.
But there's one catch. She's lied to Queen Victoria and her court, and now has to find her way back to 2025 before she gets caught and sent to the gallows, all the while trying not to fall too hard for the hot marquess who's decided to help her.
An American Desi in Queen Victoria's Court is a sweet romcom about what happens when a time-travelling modern woman crosses paths with the Victorian Era's most charming rake. Seeing history through this lens in the book was interesting to me, especially since this aspect is a less explored part in particular. The main characters Meera and Leo are so lovable, and they have great chemistry. The book also just has the right amount of spice.
I had such a fun time reading this. I need more time-travelling shenanigans please.
