spacebunn finished reading and wrote a review...
The first time I read this novel it conpletly flew over my head. I had no idea what was happening why it was happening and the narrator was disorienting. This was some three years ago. I finished the book today and I have to say that it is, in it's own right, so amazing. Many may not agree with me, but I totally love the way Modernist writers composed their novels. The way of writing has left a deep impression on me and whenever I write I subconsciously imitate them. That may be because I read a lot of modernist novels by the end of my high school years (they were all required reading) but I really do enjoy it. It is also so incredibly impressive to me how many different topics have been stuffed into such a short book without any one of them being extra: the failiure of the American Dream, old money v. new money, the rise of capitalism, mob and mafia life, the brief mention of the alcohol ban, infidelity, etc... It perfectly captures the life of the wealthy in the 1920s, their attitudes and behaviours. Even if I find the characters incredibly infuriating, they are so real. That being said I took a star off because I hate how stoopid they are. I don't know why but I can’t stand them. They are so shallow it kills me. I have more intimate conversations with strangers in long lines. Anyways, I think it was a great book and a classic for a good damn reason.

If I don't hear someone being called Old Sport ever again it will be too soon. The first part felt slow and boring to me, it took me more than a month to get to the 50% point. From there, the pacing picked up, as well as the action and I was more into it.

Knowing the historical context and info about the author really changes how you view a book. I feel like I'm reading something completly different as opposed to when I first read it without everything I know now
