I enjoyed this book, but I admit it was a challenging read.
It took me a month to finish because I kept putting it off. I think this delay was due to my conflicting feelings about Emma.
Emma was quite annoying and did some pretty awful things, yet I couldn't bring myself to fully dislike her. She didn't love her husband, Charles, who was completely devoted to her and would do anything for her. She cheated on him multiple times and even drove him into debt. However, aren't these behaviors typical of a young girl who is still figuring out the world?
Emma was only 17 or 18 when she married Charles, under the illusion that she would have a comfortable life. While "comfortable" doesn't mean luxurious, it's important to consider that, in the 19th century, a girl who spent her time immersed in romance novels might not have fully understood how life works.
So, at the end of the day, is Emma truly a "bad person," or is she just very naĆÆve? I believe she is a victim of her generation, where women had to marry to survive and often had no say in choosing their husbands. She never loved Charles, which I think is acceptable. I felt pity for him because he was a good man and a loving husband. In a perfect world, Emma would be free to choose her own path, and Charles would find someone who could reciprocate his love.
The book is beautifully written and features a compelling plot. Although it attempts to impart a "moral lesson" about the dangers of women indulging in romance novels, which can lead to recklessness, I see it as a powerful portrayal of the conditions 19th-century women endured and how they coped. It demonstrates that romance novels have long served as a form of escapism.
