i didn't love all of the dialogue. i find unrealistic dialogue more pretentious than funny nowadays, but i respect it. and generally, i didn't get a funny vibe from this at all (which i think was for the best!!) so the blurbs from other authors confused me a bit. i found all of this really, really sad. like even the moments where it seemed she was doing ridiculous things, i was distraught because it was very obviously unhealthy coping mechanisms. so for potential readers, as for tone, this is less "funny" than it is sad. it's a weird sad. not just straight up depressing sad. but yes, sad. and i found the ending so incredible as well and somehow the least sad part of the entire book.
the BDSM took a backseat to the emotional and familial relationships, which surprised and delighted me. it was also where most of the triggering details took place. pretty major trigger warning for sexual assault. also, she essentially paints a man's face with her own period blood which made me cringe more than anything.
edit: didn't know much about BDSM before reading (and honestly still don't) but after reading reviews, i can say with more confidence that the representation of BDSM was...off? and to be really honest, probably not necessary! i didn't really see those scenes as formative for the main character and they were at times straight up traumatizing.

This is my second time reading this and I've been enjoying the ride! The first time I stopped a few chapters before part two and I wish I would've pushed through because the plot gets way more interesting.

Donna Tartt's writing is reminiscent of a time where people had the patience and attention span to read. The plot is in the unspoken words rather than action which reminds me a lot of classic literature. I loved Harriet and resonated deeply with her desperate attempts to control her environment that was in the hands of dismissive and negligent adults. I thought Hely and his home life was a brilliant contrast to Harriets, and highlighted how intelligent and empathetic she was. As advanced as she was, Harriet is still a child and incredibly influenced by adventure novels and does not fully grasp the ramifications of her actions until it is too late... or is it? This book is more about the journey rather than answers to Robins death and on the way life in the deep south after the civil rights movement is showcased. Class, religion, racism, generational trauma, justice are all topics that are at the center of this story told through the eyes of a young girl who recognizes these issues and is learning where she fits in everything. It is disheartening seeing the reviews of this book; I believe the writing is beautiful, the characters are complex, and the themes are incorporated so seamlessly that everyone seems to think it's mostly filler!
