if you haven’t listened to the audiobook do yourself a favor and LISTEN TO THAT SHIT. max meyers does a phenomenal job as the narrator. i love how he changes his voice for the different characters and the layering of his voice for the hive was incredible. the first time i heard it i genuinely jumped a bit.. was NOT expecting that but im not disappointed. listening made the story that much more immersive.
you weren’t meant to be human was an absolute gut-wrenching, disturbing and gruesome read. i could not put it down! as someone who has had their fair share in self harm or suicidal ideations (with a slight fear of pregnancy) i found crane surprisingly relatable (don’t worry i’m in therapy now lol) i was rooting for him so bad. to know you have people around you that love you and would do anything to help you but be so afraid to burden them because you don’t think your worth the effort… just getting caught up in bullshit to not have to drown in spiraling morbid thoughts… sighhhhh at least he got to do his big one at the end 😭😭😭 FUCK LEVI
the way ajw was able to convey absolute dread throughout the whole story despite the main character being non verbal was amazing. you can literally feel the terror that crane has having to go through a full term pregnancy. the body horror and gore when displaying his body dysmorphia was graphic so if you find yourself to be a bit squeamish that is something to consider before reading. PLEASE READ ALL THE TWS. AJW DOES NOT HOLD BACK.
…also the ending?? i mean i had an idea of where things might have went but what crane actually decides to DO i definitely did not see coming (should’ve picked it up when he brought up the hamster LMAO)
overall, i absolutely ate this shit up. i would 100% re-read. i borrowed an audiobook from my local library but TRUST i’m making plans to buy a physical copy ASAP.
