Can't this book just go well for like, 30 pages?? That is all i am asking for, 30 pages of calm atmosphere and joyful moments... BUT NOOO! There must be anxiety permanently flowing through the pages!

  • Reading Research Papers

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but it has to do with reading, so why not! Cause I'm in college, I have the "joy" of being forced to read long research papers. This week's reading is 87 pages of dense academic words, complete with footnotes that are longer than most novels and an abstract that requires its own abstract to understand. I personally read it three times...once by accident, once in denial, and once while sobbing into my coffee at 3:00 am this morning (please someone save me). It's not like I don't like what these research papers are about, it's just A LOT. So I'm asking if anyone has cracked the code on getting through research papers without losing the will to live. If so, PLEASE share your secrets! 🥹

  • Revolution books recs?

I'm writing a BA thesis on Les Misérables (the musical film, sadly, not really the novel) and I'm in a big revolution mood.

Does anyone know any good fiction books about revolutions that follow more closely to the historical revolutions than the typical "group of rebels or the Chosen One save the world from the evil empire" trope? Bonus points if it's queer, fantasy, and based on other revolutions like the Haitian Revolution, the Boxer Rebellion, etc.!! Also a diverse cast would be lovely!!

Here are couple of revolution books/series I already read or am currently reading:

    • The Poppy War series
    • Les Misérables (obviously)
    • Iron Widow
    • When We Lost Our Heads
    • A Tale of Two Cities
    • The Scarlet Pimpernel
    • The Hunger Games trilogy (incl. the new releases)
    • Mistborn trilogy
    • Babel
    • Dune (shrug if we can count that)

  • When We Lost Our Heads
Marquis de Sade, anyone? - Thoughts from 65% (page 334)

I only know the most basic facts about him and his work, but I made the connection a bit back in the story when Sadie named her the characters of her novel Justine and Juliette. Also characters in work by de Sade.

Also, Sadie’s name is obviously very similar to his, so I’m wondering if there’s some kind of connection there.

Curious to see of the story of our girls will mirror his life or that of the characters in his stories, or maybe it’s just a coincidence or a little joke the author put in for us to find 🙂

  • Guardians Top 100 Book of All Time - hit or miss?

This may be a bit niche but I’m very curious as I think the reason PB does so well is authentically and truly expanding us Boundling’s genre range. Not only that, it exposes us to different perceptions of “classics” or “firm favourites” either in the sense of a “true” classic or classic from growing up/staying with you as a reader.

The Guardian has posted their 100 books of all time , through asking 170 critics, authors and academics “worldwide” for their top 10 novels of all time then ranking them based off the collective. Whilst it seems to have been spearedheaded by two women (one being BIPOC) and they note improvements in diverse representation - the list still feels predictable?

It raises a question of books that are deemed “important” reads (mainly by the west/Europe) and peoples genuinely favourite reads. I’m a bit cynical of what the pool of the guardian looks like, and even more so that it truly is “worldwide”.

Obviously, having really enjoyed the diversity from PageBound, I’m curious if we did a pool here, would it look similar? Would it represent more genres? Would it truly have a global scope?

So Boundlings, I hate to ask the impossible question but what are your top 10 favourite reads of all time? Doesn’t have to be in English as I know there is actually a lot people on here who’s first language is different! And that should hopefully add to the true representation in this list I’m hoping to see on here!

I’ll then try and do a ranking based of the answers and will either update this post or do a separate on (barewith me on the update and also depends if anyone answers this call!😅)

Edit: Whilst I agree with some of the Guardian’s picks it felt predictable? And I have for sure read some books, especially recently that I think should go down as “one of the greats”. The Guardian do disclaim they know it’s a touchy subject and tough to whittle down truly but as PageBound (I find) already seems to have a truly diverse community in both genre preferences and individuals on it, this is meant to be a fun idea!

Edit 2: Requirements are subjective, so either a book that’s made an impact on you/ you thought were just written incredibly/ right book in the right time of your life/ if you reread, ones you reach for repeatedly or just you throughout enjoyed!

  • Do you ever mark/keep a list of books you NEVER want to read?

I’ve had it happen a few times now where I thoroughly research a mega-hyped book and discover themes I really don’t want to deal with (like 1 person will happen to mention a trigger etc). But then later when I’m at the library or bookstore I can’t remember why I haven’t TBR’d the book yet- and it’s obviously very popular! Anyone else? Do you have a system to prevent researching a book multiple times??

  • Books about hiding the truth

Is there any fictional book writing in the narrative of the person that is hired to eliminate crime scenes, hide truths, change the narrative of laboratory accidents, change the image of certain companies, make the public confused and believe that is a cospiracy theory, something like that. 😬
