From stolen centuries to days that echo themselves, these books breathe time travel into the weave, unraveling the seams of time and lingering in the threads that slip free.

(preface: i read samuel butler's translation and am judging based on what it does as a translation + the plot of the original myth) already mentioned a lot of what i think of this translation in my forum updates, but i'll summarize it here. butler's translation is very enjoyable and engaging; he does well with adapting the action. however, he doesn't leave much room for character, simply stating what is happening. this translation does its job but don't expect it to do anything more. as for the myth itself: so so good. this is my first exposure to ancient greek literature and i am pleasantly surprised with how thoroughly i got attached to it. goes to show that stories are truly immortal. i do think the punishments odysseus gives to the unloyal women were quite harsh in the end, but i don't expect a 3000 year old story to be exempt from misogyny either. and generally speaking the women are very well-written. i love nausicaa and athena (rip to their relevance in the nolan adaptation tho), they are very dear to me. overall an excellent experience and i can't wait to dive deeper into the world of greek mythology! :)
