    🕵️‍♂️

Such a massive improvement from the first book.

The gruesomeness of the murder scene immediately raised the stakes and gave the story a much darker, more intense atmosphere, which I really enjoyed. I also loved seeing the continued development of the relationship between Robin and Strike. Their dynamic remains one of the strongest aspects of the series for me, and I’m really hoping it continues to evolve in future books.

That said, I still think there’s room for improvement when it comes to the pacing. While I found this book more engaging than the first, there were still sections that felt slower than they needed to be. I also felt that towards the end, Strike seemed to piece together a lot of the mystery without the reader fully following his train of thought. Maybe I missed some of the subtle clues along the way, but I was surprised by how much he had already figured out by the time the final reveal arrived.

Overall, this was a fascinating read and a clear step up from the first book. If you’ve already read The Cuckoo’s Calling and enjoyed it, I’d definitely recommend continuing with this one. 👍
