I laughed. I cried. Alyson is an amazing writer and person. I'm not usually one for memoirs but I have been trying to read more of them this year and this one will always be a favorite now. 10/10

Oh and I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Theres just something extra added when the author gets to narrate their work and that goes double for memoirs (for me, at least)

  • disability pride month recs!

happy disability pride month! this month is for all disabled people to celebrate the uniqueness and fights for liberation for disabled people across the world, and to support your disabled friends and loved ones.

i thought i'd share my personal recommendations of books to read for disability pride month, so here they are below (both fiction & nonfiction)

disability visibility and disability intimacy by alice wong • against technoableism: rethinking who needs improvement by ashley shew • godkiller by hannah kaner • the viral underclass: the human toll when inequality and disease collide by steven w. thrasher & jonathan m. metzl • get a life, chloe brown by talia hibbert • i'll look so hot in a coffin: and other thoughts i used to share about my body by carla sosenko • being heumann: an unrepentant memoir of a disability rights activist by judith heumann • the sign for home by blair fell • silver nitrate by silvia moreno-garcia • iron widow by xiran jay xhao • the invisible kingdom: reimagining chronic illness by meghan o'rourke

please feel free to put down any others you recommend!!! :D happy disability pride!!!

I wasnt expecting the timeline jumps, and I was expecting more about Wanda's powers/ability/connection with the water... but honestly? I'm not even mad about it, this book was full of wonderful surprises for me.

Prefacing my review with a disclaimer: I don't typically read historical fiction.

I picked this book up for my own personal reasons and boy did it deliver! I cried, I laughed, I felt so connected to these characters. The writing was lyrical and beautiful.

For so long I had no idea what was going on and then... EVERYTHING STARTED HAPPENING!!! I am not usually a fan of slow burns but the narrators helped me stick with it and I was not let down! So very worth it!

I probably should have added this to my DNF graveyard, but instead I persisted and yet, was not rewarded. Disappointed.

The book I didn't know I needed. As a disabled parent myself, I felt both connected and seen in this amazing book by Jessica Slice. With books like this you never know if you're going to get more of a personal story or more research, but this book does a fantastic job at both. The research is thorough and yet explained plainly enough for anyone to read and understand. The personal stories and struggles are that of both our author, Jessica, and other disabled parents as well.

Whether you are disabled or not, whether you are a parent or not, this book is a very important read for everyone.
