“It’s not about making the world better, it’s about using marvelous potential and intelligence to feel like they matter… because if they don’t think they matter despite being some of the most successful, important, influential people on earth, what must they think of the rest of us?” Perfectly sums up by influencer and celebrity culture needs to die off; it’s also why class solidarity is so important- the 1% don’t even like themselves so why would they ever care about the rest of the world?

Very intriguing to reread as an adult, especially during this “AI Bubble” and political climate. I felt kind of called out when the book was talking about people wanting to only be entertained and not educated by their media, because I’ve felt that recently in the past 2 years- not wanting to engage with stuff that’s real and wanting to escape. But there has to be balance, or like this book points out, you’ll choose a familiar, unchallenging hell over an unfamiliar heaven.

“It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away.” There’s so much pressure to “leave a mark on the world” and I think this quote really simplifies it down to it just being important that you understand yourself well and operate in the world from that understanding, not from societal pressure or expectations.

“Books show the pores in the face of life. The comfortable people want only wax moon faces, poreless, hairless, expressionless.” Fable is talking about how books contain the texture of life, and why people prefer the ease of other media that focuses more on placating, as opposed to educating or challenging.

“Chock them so full of ‘facts’ they feel stuffed, but absolutely ‘brilliant’ with information. Then they’ll feel they’re thinking, they’ll get a sense of motion without moving. And they’ll be happy…” Wowee, wow. I feel like this explains why progressive political movements lack substance and effort, this explains the over therapized way people talk, and also explains cancel culture. People think knowing is the same as doing.
