There were so many good lines, but here are some of my favorites:
šāI feel selfishly, beautifully happy. I just chose something on my own, for my own. Without the nagging feeling that the only path I could take was the one pre-trodden for me.ā - Elsie
šāBecause I want to know these thingsā - Jack (Thereās something unsaid in this. Because I want to know your life, maybe or Because I want to know you - Elsie)
šāIād rather you ask than overthinkā - Jack
šāIād love to know what youāre thinkingā - Jack
šāElsie, thereās very little I wouldnāt do for youā - Jack
This book made me feel seen, heard and understood. šš
Writing style is in Elsieās POV. Story goes where Elsie, a barely surviving adjunct professor and theoretical physicist, balances teaching with a secret job as a professional fake girlfriend. She then met Jack Smith, a renowned experimentalist who ruined her mentor's career, when she interviews for a dream job at MIT and finds him on the hiring committee.Ā
Has themes of rom-com, spice level to 3 i guess, a bit of family issues, finding oneself, belonging and overcoming the need for approval and acceptance.
I loved the character development for both Jack and Elsie. As an overthinker and people pleaser, it healed me reading how Jack handled Elsie, always a step ahead of Elsie, where he could be both firm and soft for Elsie (he was sooooo in love with Elsie š) genuinely wanting to know Elsie, encouraging her to come out of that shell and the need to please everyone. Jack gave that space to Elsie to feel safe being herself. I loved how courageous Elsie became that she even managed to call out Jack from his own mess.
I was laughing out loud reading this. Grandma Millicent, the diva you are!! And oh, to have a friend like Cece šš I just hoped there were more chapters of Jackās background. Nonetheless, Ali Hazelwood, i love the woman you are!
I hope we all find that someone who will not only encourage us to grow, but stay there beside us while weāre doing it šāØ

Some of my favorite lines in the book
š„ Itās easy to be brave. Harder to know when not to fight š„ At every critical juncture you were given options; you were given a way out. Yet you picked precisely the roads that led you here. š„ Destiny is a myth. Destiny is the only myth. The gods choose nothing. You chose. š„ Fear was impossible to eradicate. But so was the will to survive. š„ The world was simpler when all that existed was what you could perceive in front of you. š„ āBut itās not fairā āItās life Kesegiā
I canāt even put into words how I felt after finishing this book. It was such a hard read - in a sense that it gave mo so much emotions all at once - hatred, grief, hope, loss, the effects of war to both the oppressor and the oppressed - it was so raw and heavy that reading it felt like you were there witnessing the whole tragedy. Chapter 21 wrecked me, and it was based off a true story between the Japanese-Chinese war/Nanjing massacre that happened in history. I was bawling my eyes out. RF Kuang, the brilliant woman you are.
Book is written in a 3rd POV style of writing and started with the FMC, Fang Runin, a local opium dealer at Tikany (province) finding her way to join Sinegard Academy. The rest is for you to find out ⨠Main theme was war, with elements of Chinese mythology, shamanism, history. Trigger warnings on violence, brutality, topics about comfort women and sexual abuse. Even though there are too many names and locations mentioned, world building was easy to follow.
Rinās character was written beautifully that you can feel whatever emotions she was feeling at that particular moment. She was already a fighter to begin with and was even more amplified at the end. The side characters had their own shining moment as well which I loved. There were characters that had their redemption arc too which I also loved.
Even though this was a very painful read, it was worth the read. Itās like reading Attack on Titan in a novel š
