Thank you to Del Rey for providing access to an ARC for review via NetGalley.

Full disclosure: this is my first time reading noir, and I liked it!

Reading The Intrigue felt like following a mysterious telenovela. The story presents quite a bit of drama and conundrums. The beginning felt somewhat predictable, based on the book description, but then there are twists and turns! I enjoyed that pretty much all characters are somewhat unlikable due to their questionable choices, yet, you kinda want to root for each of them or understand why they do what they do. I didn’t anticipate that the book had a sprinkle of spice or that we would get flashbacks throughout the book and I liked how these played and added context to the story. The ending was okay.

This medium paced book is great for lovers of noir and Silvia Moreno GarcĂa's writing.

Thanks to the author for providing an ARC to review.

Wow. This novella shares a raw and brutal story, full of botanical and ancestral magic, and deeply disturbing relationships, but I am glad and grateful to have read it. I had visceral reactions while reading and had to take a break after the birthday scene.

The story is about motherhood, mothers and daughters, generational trauma, breaking away from family pains & trauma, and finding yourself.

De la Luz is a gifted author. I enjoyed the prose and the writing style felt both magical and gut wrenching.
