i used to have a strong dislike of odysseus as a character, but have always been entertained by his wild journey home--meeting the lotus eaters, circeās island, scylla and charybdis, the petty ways the gods punish him, etc. and tbh madeline millerās retelling of circeās experience is more my cup of tea. but since emily wilson never sugarcoats anything odysseus does, she portrays him in a more interesting but brutal way than faglesā version of him i read when i was a teen.
even if the language is less āpoeticā in the flowery sense, iād still recommend wilsonās translation because it is easier to get into. orrrr if you were left disappointed by the lack of the divine and/or feminine characters in christopher nolanās movie š
