The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Inspired by the Moskstraumen, tidal eddies and whirlpools in northern Norway which are real, the story is couched as a story within a story, a tale told at the summit of a mountain climb. The horrific tale is laid out by an old man who reveals that he only appears old - "You suppose me a very old man," he says, "but I am not. It took less than a single day to change these hairs from a jetty black to white, to weaken my limbs, and to unstring my nerves." The narrator, seeing the power of the whirlpool in the ocean visible from the mountain top, is then told of the man's fishing trip with his two brothers a few years ago in which they encountered the whirlpool. El corazón delator (título original en inglés: The Tell-Tale Heart), también conocido como El corazón revelador, es un cuento del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe, publicado por primera vez en el periódico literario The Pioneer en enero de 1843. Poe lo republicó más tarde en su periódico The Broadway Journal en su edición del 23 de agosto de 1845. La historia presenta a un narrador anónimo obsesionado con el ojo enfermo (que llama "ojo de buitre") de un anciano con el cual convive. Finalmente decide asesinarlo. El crimen es estudiado cuidadosamente y, tras ser perpetrado, el cadáver es despedazado y escondido bajo las tablas del suelo de la casa. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Born in Boston, he was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian." With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. Later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point and declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, Poe parted ways with John Allan. Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Baltimore in 1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin. In January 1845 Poe published his poem, "The Raven," to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its publication. For years, he had been planning to produce his own journal, The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents. Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields, such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished work in the mystery genre.

Il narratore riceve una lettera dal suo amico di infanzia Roderick Usher, in cui lo supplica di essere raggiunto nella sua antica dimora di famiglia, la casa Usher. Lo scrittore viaggia, così, per un intero giorno a cavallo e appena scorge l'antico edificio, viene invaso da un intenso sentimento di tenebre. Non c'è niente lì che non sia la casa, gli alberi spogli, una profonda pozza d'acqua nera che riflette casa e paesaggio, entrambi tenebrosi. Il narratore si persuade che ci deve essere un'atmosfera specifica in quel luogo che non ha affinità con l'aria del cielo, ma esala da tutte le cose lì presenti un vapore arcano e greve. Nonostante ogni singola pietra costituente l'edificio sia molto consumata dal tempo, la muratura nell'insieme sembra perfettamente integra, conservata e ben salda. L'occhio di un minuzioso osservatore, però, potrebbe scoprire una fessura pressoché invisibile che, partendo dal tetto dell'edificio, percorre la facciata a zig zag, fino a perdersi nelle acque cupe della tetra pozza. Quando lo scrittore arriva, un domestico gli prende in custodia il cavallo, e un altro lo accompagna nella sala dove il padrone di casa giace steso su un divano. Appena lo vede entrare, Roderick si alza dal divano e lo accoglie con generoso calore. Il narratore trova il suo amico orribilmente cambiato, in pessimo stato di smunto, la pelle spettrale, gli occhi lucidi, i capelli trascurati e lunghi come una ragnatela fluttuano sulla sua testa. Usher spera che la presenza dell'amico possa essergli di sollievo per la sua malattia. Roderick gli spiega che, ultimamente, soffre di un'ipersensibilità morbosa che acuisce i suoi sensi. A causa di questa malattia Usher tollera solo il cibo più insipido, è intollerante agli odori dei fiori, la luce è una tortura per i suoi occhi, e solo pochi suoni come, per esempio, quelli di strumenti a corda non lo colmano di orrore. Roderick aggiunge che forse il morbo che l'affligge è dovuto alle precarie condizioni di salute della sua amata sorella, Lady Madeline che soffre di frequenti, anche se lievi e parziali, attacchi catalettici. Mentre Usher parla della sorella Lady Madeline, questa percorre lentamente una remota parte della sala e scompare senza nemmeno notare la presenza dell'amico di Roderick. Proprio dopo la prima sera d'arrivo del narratore, sembra che Lady Madeline si arrenda al potere maligno del distruttore da quanto riferisce Roderick allo scrittore che pensa di non vederla più viva. Nei giorni successivi di soggiorno il narratore cerca di distrarre l'angosciato amico dalle sue afflizioni dipingendo, leggendo e ascoltando la musica improvvisata della sua chitarra. Una sera Usher annuncia, bruscamente, all'amico che sua sorella Lady Madeline è morta e gli chiede se insieme possono portare il corpo nelle segrete della casa per qualche tempo prima della sua definitiva sepoltura, dato il carattere inconsueto del morbo della sorella, le indiscrete e insistenti indagini mediche, e la collocazione non protetta del cimitero di famiglia. L'amico acconsente ad aiutarlo. Portano così la bara contenente Lady Madeline nelle segrete della casa Usher. É durante questo frangente che lo scrittore vedendola bene in volto nota la medesima faccia di Roderick che gli riferisce che sono gemelli e che simpatie difficilmente comprensibili erano intercorse fra di loro. Successivamente chiudono il coperchio sulla bara e poi chiudono la porta massiccia di ferro della segreta, ritornando nelle stanze superiori della casa. La buia, piccola e umida segreta in cui la collocano si trova esattamente al di sotto della camera dell'ospite. Nei giorni successivi, la malattia di Usher subisce un peggioramento evidente, Roderick trascura o dimentica le quotidiane occupazioni, vaga di stanza in stanza con passo frettoloso e senza meta, contempla il vuoto per ore con profonda attenzione come se udisse suoni inesistenti. In taluni momenti il narratore pensa che la mente di Roderick sia afflitta da un opprimente segreto che non ha il coraggio di comunicare a nessuno. Lo scrittore, atterrito, ha paura che la condizione dell'amico lo stia contagiando e si sente penetrare lentamente dalle fantastiche influenze delle sue superstizioni assurde ma affascinanti. La settima o ottava notte dopo, il narratore mentre è a letto, non riesce a prendere sonno e così decide di vestirsi in fretta e inizia a passeggiare su e giù nella stanza, finché bussa alla sua porta Roderick che, aprendo la finestra della stanza, gli fa notare che fuori c'è un uragano. Lo scrittore invita Usher a sedersi, perché guardare fuori non gli giova alla salute già precaria, e per distrarlo decide di leggergli il primo libro a portata di "Mad Trist" di Sir Launcelot Canning. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) fue un escritor, poeta, crítico y periodista romántico estadounidense, generalmente reconocido como uno de los maestros universales del relato corto, del cual fue uno de los primeros practicantes en su país. Fue renovador de la novela gótica, recordado especialmente por sus cuentos de terror. Confrontés à la violence des éléments naturels et à la cruauté des hommes, les héros sont brutalement initiés à la vie d’adulte. La disparition de Pym dans la brume, l’inachèvement du roman et la mystification à laquelle s’est livrée Poe ont fasciné des auteurs aussi différents que Rimbaud, Borges ou Lovecraft, tandis que Jules Verne en a écrit une suite (Le Sphinx des glaces). Ce roman n’a pas fini de nous offrir ses mystères.

Prince Prospero attempts to avoid a dangerous plague known as the Red Death by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, has a masquerade ball within seven rooms of his abbey, each decorated with a different color.In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms. The story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death, though some critics advise against an allegorical reading. Many different interpretations have been presented, as well as attempts to identify the true nature of the titular disease.

Metzengerstein

The story takes place in Hungary, between two rival families: the Metzengersteins and the Berlifitzings. The bitter enmity between the two families is so old that no one knows how far back it dates. The narrator states that its origin appears to rely on an old prophecy: "A lofty name shall have a fearful fall when, as the rider over his horse, the mortality of Metzengerstein shall triumph over the immortality of Berlifitzing." Young Frederick, Baron of Metzengerstein, inherits the family fortune at age 18 (though the age changes throughout its many re-publications[1]) and begins to exhibit particularly cruel behavior. "The behavior of the heir out-heroded Herod".[2] A few days after he receives his inheritance, the stables of the rival family Berlifitzing catch fire, killing the family's patriarch, William Von Berlifitzing. It is implied that Metzengerstein himself may have been responsible for this act of arson. That day, Metzengerstein sits staring at an old tapestry depicting a Metzengerstein who kills a Berlifitzing who lies at the feet of his horse. He thinks he sees the horse move and take on "an energetic and human expression." A few minutes later, he's told that a new, remarkable "fiery-colored" horse has been found in his stables with the letters "W.V.B." branded on its forehead, "I supposed them, of course, to be the initials of William Von Berlifitzing, but all at the castle are positive in denying any knowledge of the horse." The horse displays "ferocious and demonlike" qualities. Only the baron is brave enough to try to break the mysterious horse. Day after day, Metzengerstein rides it as if addicted, and becomes less and less interested in the affairs of his house. During a nocturnal ride, the Metzengerstein castle catches fire. The runaway horse, against the horseman's orders, jumps into the flames with its rider, killing the last of the Metzengerstein clan. The horrified onlookers see a cloud of smoke settle above the castle in the shape of "the distinct colossal figure of — a horse."

"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in Graham's Magazine in 1841. It has been claimed as the first detective story; Poe referred to it as one of his "tales of ratiocination". Similar works predate Poe's stories, including Das Fräulein von Scuderi (1819) by E.T.A. Hoffmann and Zadig (1748) by Voltaire. C. Auguste Dupin is a man in Paris who solves the mysterious brutal murder of two women. Numerous witnesses heard a suspect, though no one agrees on what language was spoken. At the murder scene, Dupin finds a hair that does not appear to be human. As the first true detective in fiction, the Dupin character established many literary devices which would be used in future fictional detectives including Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Many later characters, for example, follow Poe's model of the brilliant detective, his personal friend who serves as narrator, and the final revelation being presented before the reasoning that leads up to it. Dupin himself reappears in "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter".

For indeed strange things shall happen, and secret things be known, and many centuries shall pass away, ere these memorials be seen of men. And, when seen, there will be some to disbelieve, and some to doubt, and yet a few who will find much to ponder upon in the characters here graven with a stylus of iron. Edgar Allan Poe, (born January 19, 1809, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.--died October 7, 1849, Baltimore, Maryland), American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor who is famous for his cultivation of mystery and the macabre. His tale "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841) initiated the modern detective story, and the atmosphere in his tales of horror is unrivaled in American fiction. His "The Raven" (1845) numbers among the best-known poems in the national literature. Poe was the son of the English-born actress Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe, Jr., an actor from Baltimore. After his mother died in Richmond, Virginia, in 1811, he was taken into the home of John Allan, a Richmond merchant (presumably his godfather), and of his childless wife. He was later taken to Scotland and England (1815-20), where he was given a classical education that was continued in Richmond. For 11 months in 1826 he attended the University of Virginia, but his gambling losses at the university so incensed his guardian that he refused to let him continue, and Poe returned to Richmond to find his sweetheart, (Sarah) Elmira Royster, engaged. He went to Boston, where in 1827 he published a pamphlet of youthful Byronic poems, Tamerlane, and Other Poems. Poverty forced him to join the army under the name of Edgar A. Perry, but, on the death of Poe's foster mother, John Allan purchased his release from the army and helped him get an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Before going, Poe published a new volume at Baltimore, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems (1829). He successfully sought expulsion from the academy, where he was absent from all drills and classes for a week. He proceeded to New York City and brought out a volume of Poems, containing several masterpieces, some showing the influence of John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He then returned to Baltimore, where he began to write stories. In 1833 his "MS. Found in a Bottle" won $50 from a Baltimore weekly, and by 1835 he was in Richmond as editor of the Southern Literary Messenger. There he made a name as a critical reviewer and married his young cousin Virginia Clemm, who was only 13. Poe seems to have been an affectionate husband and son-in-law.

"The Cask of Amontillado" (sometimes spelled "The Casque ..") is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in the November 1846 issue of "Godey's Lady's Book." It is set in a nameless Italian city in an unspecified year (possibly during the eighteenth century) and concerns the revenge taken by the narrator on a friend who he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around the possibility of a person being buried alive or enclosed in a small space with not possibility of escape (aka immurement). Abandoned by his father and the later death of his mother, he was taken into the foster care of John Allan, a Virginia tobacco farmer. Now styled as Edgar Allan Poe, he distinguished himself at the University of Virginia but was equally adept at collecting debts from his assiduous gambling. His stepfather's disapproval shattered their fragile relationship and Poe left home to seek his fortune. In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia but despite his prolific activities - journalism, poetry, lecturing, short stories, publishing, criticism and experimentation with fictional genres, including the detective novel which he virtually invented with the publication of The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) - he received scant recognition for his efforts until the publication of The Raven in 1845. The poem's instant popularity gave him a new visibility in literary circles, but his personal situation remained desperate: poverty, illness, drink, and the physical decline and ultimate death of Virginia in 1847 led to his untimely and premature decline. In 1849 he was found sick, injured and semi-conscious in a Baltimore tavern. Taken to hospital, he lingered on for four days, but never recovered and on October 7th Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of 40. He was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters - a genius who, thanks to his dire reputation, was tragically misunderstood during his lifetime. It was not until Baudelaire enthusiastically translated his work that he found a wider audience in Europe, and became not only an enormous influence on modern French literature but also on the acclaimed work of writers such as Dostoevsky, Conan Doyle and Jules Verne. This volume not only includes Poe's most well-known works but also over 50 of his poems.

The Gold-Bug is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Set on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, the plot follows William Legrand, who was recently bitten by a gold-colored bug. His servant, Jupiter, fears Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator, who agrees to visit his old friend. Legrand pulls the other two into an adventure after deciphering a secret message that will lead to a buried treasure. Poe submitted The Gold-Bug as an entry to a writing contest sponsored by the Philadelphia Dollar Newspaper. His story won the grand prize and was published in three installments, beginning in June 1843. The Gold-Bug was an instant success and was the most popular and most widely read of Poe's works during his lifetime. It also helped popularize cryptograms and secret writing.

"The Man of the Crowd" is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. An unnamed narrator is sitting in a coffee shop in London. He is fascinated by the crowd outside the window and considers how isolated people think they are, despite "the very denseness of the company around." He takes time to categorize the different types of people he sees. As evening falls, he focuses on "a decrepit old man, some sixty-five or seventy years of age," whose face has a peculiar idiosyncrasy, and whose body "was short in stature, very thin, and apparently very feeble." Although he is wearing filthy, ragged clothes, they are of a "beautiful texture." As the man moves on, the narrator dashes out of the shop to follow him. He leads the narrator through bazaars and shops, buying nothing, and into a poorer part of the city, then back into "the heart of the mighty London." At which point the two meet.

The works of American author Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) include many poems, short stories, and one novel. His fiction spans multiple genres, including horror fiction, adventure, science fiction, and detective fiction, a genre he is credited with inventing. These works are generally considered part of the Dark romanticism movement, a literary reaction to Transcendentalism. Poe's writing reflects his literary theories: he disagreed with didacticism and allegory. Meaning in literature, he said in his criticism, should be an undercurrent just beneath the surface; works whose meanings are too obvious cease to be art. Poe pursued originality in his works, and disliked proverbs. He often included elements of popular pseudoscience’s such as phrenology and physiognomy. His most recurring themes deal with questions of death, including its physical signs, the effects of decomposition, concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, and mourning. Though known as a masterly practitioner of Gothic fiction, Poe did not invent the genre; he was following a long-standing popular tradition. Poe's literary career began in 1827 with the release of 50 copies of Tamerlane and Other Poems credited only to "a Bostonian", a collection of early poems that received virtually no attention. In December 1829, Poe released Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems in Baltimore before delving into short stories for the first time with "Metzengerstein" in 1832. His most successful and most widely read prose during his lifetime was "The Gold-Bug", which earned him a $100 prize, the most money he received for a single work. One of his most important works, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", was published in 1841 and is today considered the first modern detective story. Poe called it a "tale of ratiocination". Poe became a household name with the publication of "The Raven" in 1845, though it was not a financial success. The publishing industry at the time was a difficult career choice and much of Poe's work was written using themes specifically catered for mass market tastes.

The story is told by an old man who reveals that he only appears old - "You suppose me a very old man," he says, "but I am not. It took less than a single day to change these hairs from a jetty black to white, to weaken my limbs, and to unstring my nerves." The narrator, convinced by the power of the whirlpools he sees in the ocean beyond, is then told of the "old" man's fishing trip with his two brothers a few years ago.

Compite con este muchacho, pero el le supera facilmente, de manera que lo considera prueba de su autentica superioridad. Este chico comienza a imitar la forma de vestir, la manera de andar e incluso la forma de hablar del protagonista (aunque tiene un defecto en el habla que solo le permite hablar susurrando), y llega un momento en que William descubre que este tiene exactamente su misma cara. Al ver esto, William abandona inmediatamente la academia, solo para descubrir que su doble se ha marchado el mismo dia. William con el tiempo estudia en Eton y Oxford, haciendose cada vez mas depravado y ganando enormes cantidades de dinero mediante enganos al jugar a las cartas con un pobre noble y la seduccion de una mujer casada. En esta etapa aparece su doble de nuevo, con la cara siempre cubierta, susurrando unas pocas palabras que alertan a otros sobre el comportamiento de William. En el ultimo de estos incidentes, en un baile en Roma, William arrastra a su doble a una antecamara y lo apunala.
