Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco was an Italian medievalist, philosopher, semiotician, novelist, cultural critic, and political and social commentator. In English, he is best known for his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory, as well as Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on similar themes.Eco wrote prolifically throughout his life, with his output including children's books, translations from French and English, in addition to a twice-monthly newspaper column "La Bustina di Minerva" (Minerva's Matchbook) in the magazine L'Espresso beginning in 1985, with his last column (a critical appraisal of the Romantic paintings of Francesco Hayez) appearing 27 January 2016. At the time of his death, he was an Emeritus professor at the University of Bologna, where he taught for much of his life. In the 21st century, he has continued to gain recognition for his 1995 essay "Ur-Fascism", where Eco lists fourteen general properties he believes comprise fascist ideologies.

Dal 1959 al 1961 curavo sul Verri una rubrica, "Diario minimo", che intendeva raccogliere osservazioni di costume, parodie letterarie, fantasie e dissennatezze di autori vari. Alcuni pezzi, ritagli di giornale, citazioni bizzarre et similia, erano anonimi, e per quanto ricordo i vari collaboratori della rivista me li passavano via via per alimentare la rubrica. Essendone alimentatore per mandato, vi avevo pubblicato più di ogni altro, prima piccole moralità e poi via via pastiches letterari. Verso il 1962 Vittorio Sereni mi chiese di riunire questi miei pezzi in un volume e siccome, a rubrica ormai estinta, "Diario minimo" era diventato ormai quasi il nome di un genere, scelsi questo titolo per il libro che poi uscì nel 1963. La storia del libro è quella che è: so che in vari dipartimenti di architettura si insegna ancora il Paradosso di Porta Ludovica, per non dire della "Fenomenologia di Mike Bongiorno", citata anche da chi non l'ha letta, tanto che mi è accaduto di vederla definita come "un libro su", mentre si tratta di sei paginette. Ma la mia propensione a tentare altri diari minimi non si è esaurita; ed ecco che, nel 1992, a distanza di quasi trent'anni ho deciso di pubblicare "Il secondo diario minimo", sempre fedele all'insegna palazzeschiana del "lasciatemi divertire".

Foucault's Pendulum is divided into ten segments represented by the ten Sefiroth. The novel is full of esoteric references to the Kabbalah. The title of the book refers to an actual pendulum designed by the French physicist Léon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the earth, which has symbolic significance within the novel.
Bored with their work, and after reading too many manuscripts about occult conspiracy theories, three vanity publisher employees (Belbo, Diotallevi and Casaubon) invent their own conspiracy for fun. They call this satirical intellectual game "The Plan", a hoax that connects the medieval Knights Templar with other occult groups from ancient to modern times. This produces a map indicating the geographical point from which all the powers of the earth can be controlled—a point located in Paris, France, at Foucault’s Pendulum. La vicenda si svolge nel medioevo, nell’arco di sette giorni, in un monastero benedettino in una località imprecisata del nord Italia.
Guglielmo da Baskerville, monaco francescano, ex-inquisitore e consigliere dell’Imperatore, si reca insieme al giovane benedettino nonché voce narrante Adso da Melk, in un’abbazia allo scopo di partecipare ad un’importante riunione che vede contrapposti i francescani, fautori della povertà del Cristo, e la delegazione papale. Questo incontro era stato organizzato allo scopo di permettere alle due parti di trovare un accordo.
L’abbazia vive ore tormentate. Subito dopo il loro arrivo, l’Abate chiede a Guglielmo di indagare sulle cause della morte violenta di uno dei suoi conventuali. In effetti durante la notte, Adelmo da Otranto, un giovane monaco, è caduto dall’edificio, un’imponente costruzione nella quale si trovano sia il refettorio che l’immensa biblioteca dell’abbazia.
Nonostante la libertà di movimento concessa all’ex inquisitore, si susseguono altre morti e tutte sembrano ruotare intorno alla biblioteca e ad un misterioso manoscritto. Questa biblioteca, tra le più grandi della cristianità, è costruita come un labirinto, un luogo segreto, allo scopo di proteggerla dagli intrusi. The Search for a Perfect Language

This beautifully produced book, an object of desire in itself, is the transcription of a long conversation between the two men in which they discuss a vast range of subjects, from what can be defined as the first book, to the idea of the library, the burning of books both accidental and deliberate, and what will happen to knowledge and memory when infinite amounts of information are available at the click of a mouse. En route there are delightful digressions into personal anecdote about everything from Eco's first computer to the book Carrière is most sad to have sold.
Readers will close this book feeling that they have had the privilege of eavesdropping on an intimate discussion between two great minds. And while, as Carrière says, the one certain thing about the future is that it is unpredictable, it is clear from this conversation that, in some form or other, the book will survive. After all, as Eco says: like the spoon, once invented, it cannot be bettered.

L'autore ne ha scritto negli ultimi decenni e qui ne presenta una silloge, aggiornando e riadattando per questa raccolta i testi scritti in occasioni precedenti. Si va da un'ampia ricerca (che parte da Aristotele e arriva all'odierna intelligenza artificiale) su due rappresentazioni della nostra conoscenza, esemplificate nei due modelli dell'albero e del labirinto, a due studi che seguono la vicenda della metafora da Aristotele al Medioevo. Da uno studio che verte su come i medievali classificavano il latrato canino e gli altri suoni animali, alla rilettura del caotico commento di Beato di Liebana all'Apocalisse. Dagli studi sulle tecniche medievali di falsificazione, a un excursus sulla storia dell'ars combinatoria da Lullo a Pico della Mirandola. Dalla ricerca secolare di una lingua perfetta alla semiotica implicita nei Promessi sposi, fino ad arrivare a una serie di studi su Kant, Peirce, Croce, le teorie semantiche di Bréal e un confronto polemico col "pensiero debole".
