Dear Wendy

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Dear Wendy's Sophie and Jo, two aromantic and asexual students at Wellesley College, engage in an online feud while unknowingly becoming friends in real life, in this dual POV Young Adult contemporary debut from Ann Zhao Sophie Chi is in her first year at Wellesley College (despite her parents’ wishes that she attend a “real” university, rather than a liberal arts school) and has long accepted her aromantic and asexual identities. Despite knowing she’ll never fall in love, she enjoys running an Instagram account that offers relationship advice to students at Wellesley. No one except her roommate knows that she’s behind the incredibly popular "Dear Wendy" account. When Joanna “Jo” Ephron―also a first-year student at Wellesley―created their “Sincerely Wanda” account, it wasn't at all meant to be serious or take off like it does―not like Dear Wendy’s. But now they might have a rivalry of sorts with Dear Wendy? Oops . As if Jo’s not busy enough having existential crises over gender, the fact that she’ll never truly be loved or be enough, or her few friends finding The One and forgetting her! While tensions are rising online, Sophie and Jo are getting closer in real life, bonding over their shared aroace identities. As their friendship develops and they work together to start a campus organization for other a-spec students, can their growing bond survive if they learn just who’s behind the Wendy and Wanda accounts? With its exploration of a-spec identities, college life, and more, this platonic comedy, perfect for fans of Netflix’s The Half of It and Alice Oseman’s Loveless , is ultimately a love story about two people who are not―and will not―be in love!

9.71/10. Such a vibe and an enjoyable fun time.

    Characters-10

The characters in this book were great. I loved Sophie and Jo. From their first interactions, I loved them a lot! Their friendship was the sweetest. The supporting characters were great, as was the commentary on gender and sexuality. I loved how the characters interacted with each other, and the bonds they all had.

    Atmosphere-10

This was such a vibe for a college novel. I've never been to the school where this book takes place, but I loved seeing the campus and the surrounding town.

    Writing-10

The writing in this was fantastic. I love the different tonal notes this book had from the funny banter that Sophie and Jo had. The other side of this book was the heartfelt and important discussions that took place. I loved all of this, and I'll be reading more from the author.

    Plot-10

I love both the online and offline moments of this book. Sophie and Jo had a lot of fun banter as Dear Wendy, and Wanda, and they had some great discussions online as well. Offline, there was a friendship born at a class one day, and it was so sweet. I just really loved this book about how two people found a best friend when they were in college, as opposed to when they were younger. Another part of this book was finding yourself, and accepting who you are. I also loved Sophie and Jo finding a club for people like them.

    Intrigue-9

This book was great at keeping the reader engaged. I was interested from the beginning because I loved the friendship blossoming, and how the characters interacted. I wanted to see Sophie and Jo have a great time with their friends and have a bond with others and each other.

    Logic-10

This was a logical book and the characters do a great job of discussing how they feel at certain moments in the book.

    Enjoyment-10

I loved this book. The characters were wonderful, the plot had a mix of fun and important moments.
