First and Forever (Heartache Duet, #2)

Jay McLean

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

First and Forever is the second book in the Heartache Duet, and must be read after Heartache and Hope. Duet Synopsis: Ava Diaz needs saving. She just doesn’t know it yet. Just like she doesn’t know a thing about the boy she sits next to on the first day of senior year. He thinks she’s a brat. She thinks he’s entitled. Maybe first impressions don’t always last… Because Connor Ledger’s about to save her. He just doesn’t know why. Blurb for First and Forever coming soon

Publication Year: 2019

I’m surprised to say that book two in this duet was better for me than Heartache and Hope. And no, I didn’t love it as much as everyone else but it did have some things that made me smile. So this picks back up after Heartache and Hope and we jump back into the aftermath of what happened with Connor and Ava.

I’m just going to come out and say it, Ava was a brat. She frustrated me so much you guys. There were too many moments where I rolled my eyes at either a stupid decision she made or her inner monologue going back and forth.

Connor stole my heart in this book. This boy was sweet and wanted nothing but the best for Ava and her family. He was busting his butt just to make her his endgame. Like in the last book, there are some things he could’ve done differently. However, he was my favorite character in this whole duet.

What I don’t really want to talk about is the relationship between Connor and Ava. Like I told you in my last review, I don’t think they should have anything but friends. I didn’t feel a long lasting connection between these two, let alone anything about Ava that would make Connor that dedicated to her. Maybe I’m being too critical, but I really didn’t.

My favorite thing about this book was the relationship that Connor formed with Ava’s mother. Oh my goodness, it was just fucking pure and I loved it. Their interactions were funny but at the same time, you could tell that he was really helping her and cared for her. This made the book for me!

All in all, while this book and duet weren’t one of my favorites, I know that angst readers and Jay McLean fans will enjoy it.

These two Have been through the wringer. Ava and Connor both had so much going on in their lives. Then they find one another only to have an on again off again relationship that is not good for either one.
A kid of this story happens off the page once they hit college and we learn about it when they meet back up and tell one another. That’s not my favorite way to get a story.
For me, this was not her best duet. I liked the characters but I’m not sure I got to know who they are. There were some issues that were glossed over or presented as an after thought.
