But when it comes to light that Prince Taam's death may not have been an accident, and that Jainan himself may be a suspect, the unlikely pair must overcome their misgivings and learn to trust one another as they navigate the perils of the Iskat court, try to solve a murder, and prevent an interplanetary war... all while dealing with their growing feelings for each other.

This story sunk its claws into my heart and never let go. I was hooked the entire time.
There were a number of times I had a very goofy smile on my face because
- this was definitely more political and science fiction than I had realized going in - and was more than I wanted or enjoyed.
- it was tough to keep people and their places and their ranks straight– I wasn't sure whom to remember / who would be important or how people might be interconnected. I struggled with the overall purpose and plan of many of the characters and plot
- I wanted more communication and connection between our two main characters - I felt it was very obvious that Jainan was coming from an abusive relationship. maybe Kiem was too Noble to recognize any of the signs, but there wasn't much communication happening there
- plus then this was a closed door / Fade to black! in the only scene there was! which felt somewhat out of nowhere in my opinion
- there was too much tension / effort on the suspense and mystery, not on the romance
- I agree with some reviewers that both of our main male characters were very lovable and precious
- I wanted more atmosphere –why was Iskat cold and lizardy? What were the other planets like? what about the rest of the universe?
- I wanted more pining, less confusion - though their dedication and instant ‘we are a team’ was lovely
- there were some recognizable romance tropes: only one bed/tent, rescued from a bear
- it almost felt like the crash and the middle chunk of the book didn't fit with the rest?
