characters that haunt the narrative

I'm including books where a character's presence is minimal and every character, conflict, and theme leads back to them. Their absence feels loud. Their past decisions shape the present.

Open for recommendations that meet these parameters 💓 I haven't read all the books in this list but feel fairly confident about their inclusion here, if you believe one of these doesn't fit feel free to discuss in the comments

thank youu đŸ«°đŸ«°đŸ«°đŸ«° In my dreams I hold a knife sounds right up my alley

Spoilers for Looking for Alaska * * * * * * * * * * * do you remember how much Alaska appeared in the book? I'm trying to decide if she was gone enough time to meet the standard but I read this a million years ago

Same but I think she was there for the first half of the book

ugh :( too bad, cause it almost fits perfectly. I wanted to add Wuthering Heights too but eventually didn't for the same reason. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife fits too a t though, already added it đŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ”„

Aww that's too bad. Also I didn't realize DunMeshi had this trope. I need to read it now.

Edit: Speaking of manga you should add Bungo Stray Dogs. 130+ chapters and we're still getting haunted

2

oh dungeon meshi has a textbook 'haunting the narrative' character. I love her so much

This is such a good trope and I absolutely have to recommend any Salinger book about the Glass family. Seymour Glass is the king of haunting the narrative while still being alive.

Love this list! It's such a great theme. I think The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson belongs here too.

3

I second this! I kept waiting for that character to come back with how prominent they were in the story

you're welcome đŸ’–đŸ„°

I think Antigone by Sophocles would maybe fit the description? The entire narrative is driven by the titular character wanting to honor her brother’s death đŸȘŠ

2

thank you for the rec đŸ€

I think Florence Adler Swims Forever would be a perfect addition to this list! Although I don't want to give too many details in case you don't want spoilers 😅

2

this one sounds good though đŸ„ž added it to the list

2

that's such an amazing idea for a list!!! i love it! 😍

2

thank you, I wish I had a hundred books like these 😭

2

I feel like bat eater and other names for Cora Zeng would fit well!

thank youu đŸ«¶
