Recs if you like Rolling in the Deep ...

Speculative (sci-fi, fantasy, horror etc.) novellas less than 200 pages long that are either standalone or read like a standalone story

for people who are both terrified of and fascinated by the ocean (like me)

Horror books with a page count of 200 pages or less.

Before we started defining novellas by word count, they were defined as being any book less than 200 pages. Source: my Analysis of Short Stories & Literature professor in community college. I loved that class. But he loved James Joyce. So, ymmv, I guess.

What lies within the depths... Speculative Horror books where the main horror element directly relates to a body of water (whether that be a swamp, ocean, lake, river, etc.)

Keywords: aquatic horror, ocean horror, spooky water, water horror, haunted hydrology

Note: must be more than just the backdrop ** recommendations and corrections welcome! **

Inspired by the sea fog, whistling winds, and the dark sea crashing against the rocks in summer

Horror books were cameras and journals may be all that remain

SFFH novellas for when you don't have the time for an 800 page epic but crave that mineral. rich worlds and characters that linger in your mind. includes queer, diverse, intersectional reads. Recs welcome, this is a work of love in progress ✨

These books either have a main character or main side character who's important to the plot with deaf and/or hard of hearing rep! 🙉👂🔕 I haven't read all of these, but I have read a good chunk, so I'm always happy to talk with anyone about them & recs are always appreciated! 💜

mostly horror or disturbing books that include big bodies of water, are set during the summer, or overall just give fucked up summer vibes!

We think of summer as the season of light, but shadows are longest when the sun is highest. It is the time of the year when the woods grow too thick to see through, the water grows too dark to see into, and the heat makes the mind play tricks. From the rotting porches of the South to the blood-stained cabins of the North... We call them the Summer Nightmares.

Whether by lake, sea, or ocean these stories will have you questioning whether it's safe to go into the water.
