Sinister Hospitality
Sinister hospitality plays on the theatricality or hierarchy of hospitality through the authority of a defined threshold, place or home, that allows the host to exert power over the guest in the guise of help, or for the guest to prey on the expected reciprocity of kindness. This can also include the burden of hospitality in gender roles, such as Rebecca and the Odyssey, or the strained relationship between guest and host due to race, such as The Dispossessed and Dawn. I was watching šthis video on sinister hospitality in Macbeth and then stumbled upon the line "she violated the Laws of Hospitality" that night while reading The Monk and, well, now a list.

hi fitz!!! I love this list!!! I was so interested in the use of hospitality and xenia and how there were transgressions in both directions in my recent read of the odyssey!
I was thinking, would carmilla fit on this list? carmilla takes advantage of the hospitality of laura & her father in her scheme with the carriage accident, and then wreaks havoc from within their home. or maybe another vampire story? I feel that vampire stories often have an element of sinister hospitality with the vampire as the guest having to be invited in. but also in dracula, johnathan goes to draculaās home right, so the vampire becomes the host (I havenāt actually read it yet)? anyway your list made me ponder vampires & hospitality š
