I opted to not try and make this list comprehensive but just to document the community recs from that day - however, if you have more books to recommend please comment in the forum! This is a great list! Can I check to ask, would Caleb Azumah Nelson’s books be suited to a Juneteenth list when the author is Ghanaian-British and his books are set in England? 🩵 I’m as Pan African as they come but I do associate Juneteenth with the descendants of chattel slavery in the USA only
That is a very good point- I took recommendations and only vetted a little bit to be honest. I’m going to remove those because I agree that they don’t suit this particular list. Thanks for pointing it out 🖤🖤

They did fit my prompts but my prompts weren’t specific enough :).
I think there are quite a few other books on here by authors whose ancestors were not enslaved in the U.S.—Maria Pinto, Nalo Hopkinson, and Jackie Kay, for instance, I believe are all Caribbean. C.T. Rwizi, Awaeke Emezi, and Tomi Adeyemi I think have family histories more closely resembling Nelson’s. (This is all just from what I remember reading. I could absolutely be mistaken, I didn’t double-check.)
For me, a consideration is that chattel slavery was a globalized system. Its effects were not limited to the places where people were ultimately held captive and its effects reverberate for Black folks today, whether their genetic ancestors were enslaved or not.
Another consideration is that, more specifically, Juneteenth is associated with the descendants of people enslaved in Texas, and even more specifically those present in Galveston on June 19, 1865. It’s been celebrated throughout the U.S. for many years only because of the Great Migration.
I think the specificity of the history is absolutely worth remembering and honoring! But I wonder whether doing so wouldn’t be an entirely different list of books.

Definitely some learning here for me in regards to specificity of prompts, curation etc. As I intended this list to be a record of books recommended by pagebound users on Juneteenth 2026, which were based on my prompts that all specified “Black authored books” - i think I will add back the two by Nelson and direct folks to this discussion.
