Better than the humans! đŸš·đŸ˜…

The best lovable, often witty, nonhuman side characters are the cherry on top in these sci-fi/fantasy books. These books feature nonhuman side characters that you really need an entire book for; stealing the show, because humans are overrated.

Always open to suggestions!

Loial from Wheel of Time needs a whole series for himself. I need to know more about him 😭 (to be fair I only got to Lord of Chaos but Jordan does not dig deep enough into character exploration for me.)

3

I like him, too.

3

I loved him so much

3

Loial and Bela are the MVPs of the series imo. 😂

3

YES! I was always asking where Bela was! Lol

3

I’ve added but I’m curious if the book I added includes loial, is there a book he appears in first?

2

I think it’s The Eye of the World, that is, the first book in the series.

3

Perfect thank you for the clarification!

2

I was trying to see if I noted when he appears most often but The Eye of the World works for me thank you 🙏 the list is so creative and fun!

3

I just find myself always loving these kinds of characters and realize they’re the ones I wanna read more of!

3

I love it when a side character steals the spotlight!

3

Me too! Also, I quite like villains sometimes. Not just any villain, of course, but certain ones. I start to hope that they might eventually become reformed, but that usually doesn’t happen.

2

Yes! I do love that too!

In Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars series, there was one character I was almost certain would join the good guys by the end. Well, that never actually happened, and it nearly broke my heart. On that note, perhaps you could add the Legends & Lattes books to your list? One of the characters is a shy ratkin who bakes great cakes and biscuits. He's both a supporting character and non-human.

2

@riskyreads created the list! If you respond to their comment they'll be able to see your request! 😊

2

Sorry! I wrote this in a hurry and made a mistake. But I suppose I’ll have to leave it as it is for the sake of little Ratkin, who really does deserve to be on this list.

1

Awesome list! Can i recommend The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet? This book brings out an interspecies crew with a lot of variety and depth, with Dr. Chef being my personal favorite of the cast.

3

Yes I will add it! Thank you!

3

If this list includes sci-fi as well as fantasy, you could also add Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee.

1

I should write that in cuz I meant both. 😊

2

I see you've already added this book.

Oh, this is such a cute idea! I just finished Children of Time and I think it could potentially earn a spot on this list. Portia and co (and the other inhabitants of her planet) just really make the book for me.

3

Seconded! I wanted a version of the book that fully skipped most of the human chapters.*Give me all the big critter civilisations pleeease!*đŸ•·ïžđŸ•žïžđŸœ I would have loved it if the book had revolved entirely around the spiders & made the human side more of a mystery leading up to their (formalish) meeting.

2

Perhaps the Winterlands series by Barbara Hambly could be included in this list. It has a dragon called Morkeleb who has the ability to transform into a human being. I like him more than any other human fantasy character! I'd also like to recommend The Witcher series because of the elf Avallac'h and his charming cynicism. Other series worthy of mention are the Raksura series and the City of Bones series, both by Martha Wells. The protagonists in these series are not human, but belong to fictional races invented by the authors.

2

I’ll look into these and add them. Thank you for so many suggestions!

2

You're welcome.

1

You could add the next two books in the series after The Spellshop? The third especially not only has a sidekick plant, but also a brilliant sea serpent! 🐍

2

Ya I haven’t yet decided how I’ll do this because some of these series are long and have so many books to them. So I’m worried it will flood the list. đŸ€Ł I am still considering though.

1

Totally understandable! I have a soft spot for Perry the sea serpent đŸ„°đŸ

1

I’ll add the 3rd for now and depending upon how this grows maybe the others.

2

Yayayay 😍
