The BBLL: @teddydee's Greatest Hits

A spinoff of The Big Bad Luddite List. Whereas the original list is huge and sprawling and includes many books I have not yet read, as well as some that weren't my personal favorite, this Greatest Hits version is condensed and more tightly curated. All the titles on this list are books I personally feel are worth recommending. Check the comments for potential caveats or additional contextual information about certain titles.

— CRÆFT (Langlands): There has been criticism that some of Langlands's ideas in this book are ableist and socioeconomically out of touch. I do partially agree, but don't think this criticism invalidates the book as a whole. Link to my review of Cræft for more details

— ENSHITTIFICATION (Doctorow): Doctorow places centaurs (human/machine partnerships designed to increase the human's output) on a spectrum from sinister (your boss creeping on you through a keystroke logger) to harmless/beneficial (farmers with tractors). See CRÆFT (Langlands) for a discussion of some ecological and economic downsides of expanding productivity beyond the capacity of human beings, using Doctorow's exact example of a beneficial centaur.

— THE EXTINCTION OF EXPERIENCE (Rosen): covers a lot of ground in, I think, a mostly thoughtful way. Mostly. Link to my review of The Extinction of Experience for more details

— I SEEM TO BE A VERB (Fuller): an eyeball-reading book if I ever saw one. Incredible but OOP, of course. Best read printed but if you can't find an affordable used copy, here's a pdf from the Internet Archive

— WALDEN (Thoreau): yeah, yeah, I know about the laundry and I know about the sandwiches. I think it's kind of a nothingburger. Link to pdf of essay by Rebecca Solnit + link to essay by Donovan Hohn

— WASTE WARS (Clapp): very good, with a big caveat: Clapp spends most of his time examining different facets of electronics garbage (or "recycling"). The textile waste trade isn't even mentioned — in my view a massive oversight. Link to global textile waste statistics

— THE WAY HOME (Boyle): This guy I did completely side-eye at certain parts of the book, especially the parts concerning his romantic relationship. That said, I found his philosophical commentary on capitalism provocative and on point. He gave me a lot to think about.

WALDEN MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Are you a Walden h8r or are you also into it???

2

I am so into it. I started reading it at a point in my life when I had to let go of a lot and it legit helped me so much with the process of letting go of material things. I have made it my goal to finally finish it this year 😤

Omg that's beautiful! I love when a book comes along at just the right time and leaves such a big mark.

It really did 🙂‍↕️ which makes me even more excited for this list! I'm so glad you made a Greatest's Hits because I'm definitely the type of person to get decision paralysis from a 400+ list 😭
