Ooooh I love a brain book! Suggestion: Into the Grey Zone: A Neuroscientist Explores the Border Between Life and Death - he details his attempts to communicate with people in presumed vegetative states, trying to find a way to fMRI people to see if they are in vegetative states or locked-in states. Very fascinating.

Also Patient H.M. about Henry Molaison, who received a lobotomy in 1953 at the age of 27 that caused him to be unable to form short-term memory, leading to a lot of research into the nature of memory and how we form working memories, long-term memories, sense memories.
