Does the criteria stretch to include stories of:

  • Kids who do have adult family or guardians, but who leave them for a long period of time, during which they are self reliant &/or adult care is absent.
  • Kids who have adult family or guardians, but those adults are not providing appropriate care, thus the kids are made responsible for themselves & others.

Or is it a strictly adult free zone?

Weeeell... Great question. I think yes to the first but no to the second, if those adults are still present at home. I have some runaways on here who technically have guardians, if they would go home. And one about a kid whose parents just leave him home alone for long periods. They don't need to be in this situation permanently, but I think the fantasy is having no parents, not bad parents.

Excellent, that excludes a bunch from my mental rolodex of potential recs, if you're taking them. I think there might be a few on my childhood bookshelf that fit the bill...
