I have loved Beauty and the Beast all my life, and found this book to be a pleasant surprise despite the obvious differences between myth and history. Pedro was sympathetic and flawed, but also emotionally complex. I initially struggled with his and Catherine's marriage considering their age gap, but at the same time appreciated the author's choice not to sanitize history for the sake of current tropes. I personally loved Catherine as she navigated the difficult journey from daughter to wife to mother, grappling with the rage, betrayal, and love that she found along the way. The nonlinear perspectives and alternating POVs added such depth to the story and gave me a lot of insight into how different both Pedro and Catherine really were. I'm not sure I would consider this a romance only - the marriage between Pedro and Catherine is important, yes, but I found myself much more emotionally invested with the struggles that Pedro and his children went through because of their hypertrichosis, and how Catherine came to fiercely protect her family in the face of prejudice. At the same time, the discussions of ownership and enslavement (despite the facade of riches) added to the characters' complexity - Antoinette's story was especially gut-wrenching. While there were some cases of telling rather than showing, I really do think this book was an incredible exploration of love, family, and perseverance, as well as an in-depth discussion of how truths can evolve into such well-known stories and fairytales as common as Beauty and the Beast.
