I really enjoy Kuang’s work. I finished this book after reading Katabasis. I loved them both. But I’ve noticed that I don’t really get attached to her characters not in the way I usually do, like in ACOTAR, The Hunger Games, or Red Rising. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s written in second person or if it’s just her writing style. Katabasis is more academic, so I kind of understand that, but I expected to bawl my eyes out during The Poppy War. I barely cried near the end. It’s interesting to me because when I read fiction, I cry a lot (and I love it). I expected to feel more, not just sadness but maybe something close to what I felt during hunger games when I read about those atrocious things? Can anyone relate?

before reading Katabasis, i heard that few readers liked Alice tbh for me, she has been nothing but relatable and i enjoy the fact that she feels vulnerable in a way that i have rarely seen in other female protagonists
