The Vanished Birds

I had to gather myself after finishing this, because it kind of had my heart and brain on a chokehold for the last chapter. What a read! What. A. Read.
This book has been recommended to me by a kind bookseller who heard me talk about a book I loved to a friend and approached me to tell me I had to read The Vanished Birds. And gods, were they right. I jumped in blind and it was one of the most intense, interesting and symbolic experiences of my reader’s life.
Beyond having characters extremely well built, a plot to keep you hooked from start to finish and an amazing narration that I tend to love in Sci-fi (where you follow lots of different characters, on different times, to finally be able to see the big picture and understand all the stakes of the story), I think what struck me the most about this novel is its symbolism and everything it covers and criticise through its stories and characters. So many layers in there.
While it is quite common for Sci-fi to criticise capitalism, human greed, bad use of technology, etc., I have rarely seen an author who decides to do it all with so much precision. Each layer of the story, each character, is here to teach us something in their own way, even small details we might not notice at first (Fumiko on beauty standards and education, for example).
I want to keep this spoiler free so I can motivate EVERYONE to read this book but boy do I have many things to yap about.
