”…all the while I was thinking about an article I had read years before in a general psychology newsletter. As we learn a new language, it explained, we become a different person. As we access different linguistic structures, our personalities shift: to reflect the different concepts available to us through different words, but also because of the new company we keep in a new language, and because of our preconceived notions about the language—all these things alter who we become under it. (page 34)
I was so surprised when I read this passage as I recently had a conversation on this same topic. A coworker was telling me that she has noticed a change her personality when speaking in English vs her real personality when speaking I her primary language and that her internal monologue is different for both languages. I am so intrigued by this! I only speak one language so I am always impressed by folks who know more, but I never considered that the language someone is speaking in could influence their personality and their view of the world!
I would love to hear other people’s experiences. Has learning or speaking in your non-native language also impacted you in this way? Do you feel that your personality changes from one language to another? How has it shaped your opinion of yourself or the world differently when using that language?
I am very interested to see how switching between Turkish and Italian is going to impact the main character and her view of the world/life.
