And perhaps this is the natural way of things, that went a friendship comes to an inexplicable end or wanes or simply dissolves into nothing, the change we experience at that moment seems inevitable, a destiny that was all along approaching, like someone walking towards us from a great distance, recognizable only when it is too late to turn away
We are in a tide[...] in it and of it. As foolish to think we are free of history as it would be of gravity
discussion of history seems to be a running theme in the books I pick up lately. In this book, the history of this friendship. The history of Hosam's family...and Libya. I'm not sure how I feel about the discussion of Khaled's father and how his father just seems to have a passive mentality..."things are just meant to happen" and doesn't seem to want to stand up? And I am curious how this will impact Khaled's actions--we've already seen some of it, but I am now wondering: does he regret it; has he chosen to agree with his father?

I really dragged through book 2 and the beginning of book 3 before becoming absolutely entranced by this story. I sort of wish shey were three distinct books in a series instead of one because I find it hard to stick with at times. But in classic HY style I was left clenching my heart by the final page.

Despite my frustrations with this book in its entirety I am now full invested in this story and care so much for these characters!

Clever Easter egg: the names of the quarantine camps are the real names of the Japanese interment camps that were used in WW2

This book (and particularly part 3) feels like a writing exercise or thought experiment. I’m sticking with it because I want to support HY, and I generally love her writing, but the lack of story is difficult at this point.

Every once in a while you’re in the mood for some TL Swan ridiculousness.

The premise is insane. The chemistry is strong. Overall it felt fall fetched but I appreciate her branching out.
