I’m curious about people’s opinions of Spie and her role in the story as they relates to straight romance. I feel like in a lot of straight romance, a lot of times the man/love interest is a player, cocky, and talks down to the FMC. Spie is very much filling that role here.

The few queer romances that I’ve read didn’t feel like that. At this point in the story, this feels like it’s a patriarchal romance wrapped up in sapphic wrapping.

I am straight, but I like my men gentle, sensitive, artsy, and most straight romances don’t have that, so I’m never very interested in the male lead. I would assume queer romance would have less of the “asshole romantic interest” problem, but this book is not proving that hypothesis correct 😂

Anyway, I appreciate anyone’s thoughts on this!

Such a great read! Tons of fun with political intrigue, romance, and mystery!

The main character Temmi is a well-rounded character who has bite and wit, but also vulnerability. Yes, she IS a bit clumsy, but that is far from her only fault. She’s not politically savvy, nor is she diplomatic, and it gets her in a lot of trouble. I think she was the best part of the book.

Spie and Nix are the emperor’s twins who are selecting partners in this season of Love Galaxy, and the politics drive a lot of their motivations.

I think one of the ways the story was lacking was that I expected a lot of the contestants on the show to hate one another, to have more conflict and drama. It certainly would have driven tension and distracted the reader after the murders started happening. But most of the contestants were pretty chummy 😂

As for the romance, at first, there was definitely some instalust. It didn’t last long, thankfully, but it did feel a little troupe-y. It also seemed like Spie was being portrayed as the typical “male romantic lead”—a player, an asshole, and emotionally unavailable. I wondered if Temmi, who was less sexually experienced, was meant to “fix” Spie and get her to settle down. Thankfully, that feeling also didn’t last long as it became clear that things were going in a much different direction.

While I’m usually pretty decent at figuring out the twist or mystery before it’s revealed, I saw all the clues that were dropped and still didn’t put together what the twist was! It was pretty brilliant!

I definitely recommend this book as long as you’re not in it for “The Bachelor”-esque drama!
