Needful Things was my second SK book and it did not disappoint. I really loved the main premise of having “evil” being an object to be sold and ultimately, resulting is pure chaos. The twists were very fun & unexpected. I do wish there was a map of the city like in some of his newer books.
I am very glad I picked up this book. I would recommend to other & re-read!

The first person, present tense narration really captures the childhood fog of innocence. He’s so young, going through something most adults can’t even imagine, and yet he’s still a child through it all. He still acts and thinks like a child. He’s aware that there are things he doesn’t understand yet. The reader misses out on a lot of the details because the narrator is missing out on them. It makes it all that more immersive-you’re really in his shoes. Excellent story telling.

SK is constantly bringing up how the weather is getting hotter & hotter. I assume this is supposed to represent the chaos that is slowly building? Considering this takes place in October, it should not be sweat-worthy heat. I assume the heat is meant to be in relation to Mr. Gaunt (aka the Devil).
On another note, what is the outcome of all the chaos? The city falls apart and then what? Is the point that there is no real meaning and it is all purely for Mr. Gaunt’s enjoyment?
