A couple of friends and I formed a small book club, and this was our first pick. It was short, and ChatGPT recommended it as funny and futuristic (yes, those were our exact search terms 😄). Out of the five of us, only one person liked it. One couldn’t even finish it. The other three (myself included) powered through... and strongly disliked it.

Let’s start with the positive: it was short. And… that’s it. 😅

Why didn’t I like it? Honestly, I just didn’t see the point. If the book was meant to highlight the futility of war, well, I’ve read others that did a far better job. (for example: "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "A Farewell to Arms"). The sci-fi elements—aliens and time travel—felt randomly thrown in, like an afterthought. They didn’t make much sense or add anything meaningful to the story.

Overall, this feels like one of those “you either love it or you don’t” classics. And I definitely fell into the “don’t” camp. The writing style reminded me of Virginia Woolf (especially "Orlando and "To the Lighthouse") — lots of feelings and events, but with a meandering, almost directionless tone. It also had similar vibes to "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro, another book that left me wondering, “Was that it?”

I’m always a little sad when I don’t enjoy a popular classic. But at the same time—TBR item crossed off, and a clear decision made: Kurt Vonnegut’s books just aren’t for me.

Rating: ⭐⭐ (2 stars – not my thing, but at least I tried!)

Ernest Cline delivers a fun and exciting adventure for readers of every age (and there's even a little bit of romance). It's not Little Brother with his sharp critique of society, but there are some good things pointed out here too.

Too similar to Manacled while the original is still fresh in my mind 😅.

Interesting premise 🕰️, but the unusual narration and romance style just weren't for me. Read a sample first! 📚👀
