They speak in the voices of girls, wives, and mothers, all trying to carve a space for themselves in a world ruled by jealous gods and capricious luck. Overcoming a string of challenges, these goddesses discover their own agency, and the power that comes from telling their own stories. At the heart of the book are the goddesses Sita and Parvati―women who are cast in the role of the “perfect” wife, the “perfect” mother. Comment mettre au cœur des luttes des femmes l’antiracisme, l’anticapitalisme et l’anti-impérialisme? Françoise Vergès s’attache d’abord à interroger les deux récits médiatiques qui dominent l’histoire du mouvement des femmes des années 1970 en France, l’un qui parle d’un mouvement qui aurait mené à une reconnaissance de la place des femmes françaises dans la république avec ses valeurs de laïcité et d’égalité, l’autre qui dénonce un mouvement qui aurait été exclusivement « blanc » et essentiellement intéressé par la liberté sexuelle. En faisant disparaître le radicalisme des mouvements de femmes des années 1970 qui furent portés par l’énergie des grandes luttes anti-impérialistes et antiracistes pour passer à un féminisme de la pacification, c’est le désir de faire éclater les structures qui est effacé. Dans un deuxième temps, à travers une lecture critique de la métaphore de "vagues", l’auteure propose une temporalité et une spatialité des luttes des femmes pour la justice et la liberté, contre le racisme et pour l’égalité qui excède celles du cadre national.
