If I could have listened to this book in one sitting, I would have.
It was very different from Leigh Bardugo's grishaverse (first books I read from her) but it was a nice change of scenery and pace. I'm not the biggest fan of centuries old men being paired with young women who seemingly know nothing about the world... But I loved the relationship between Luzia and Santangel! It was compelling enough to make me giggle and kick my feet as I listened to the audio book instead of cringe.
This felt very refreshing to have a story set in Spain, around the time of the inquisition which I have only briefly studied while learning Spanish in high school.
I really enjoyed this!

Read Bone Season by Samantha Shannon while you wait for the fourth book to come out. It’s not where close to the same plot, Bone Season is a dystopia series, but the vibes and themes are so similar. Paige and Bree are both stressing everybody out with their impulsive choices and poor decision making and everyone wants to exploit both of their unique super powerful abilities. Themes of the colonization of the surrounding European nations. The love interest is both Sel and Nick in a trench coat. Just trust me alr 🤌

This is a PSA for anyone thinking of listening to the audiobook read by Lauren Fortgang. The POV in this book is quite fluid but unfortunately the narrator doesn't use much variety in voicing different characters. It's very hard to tell whose mind you're in or even who is talking when there are more than two people in a scene.
I don't want to entirely dissuade people from listening to it altogether but it's definitely a challenge!
EDIT: I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Ninth House also narrated by Lauren Fortgang, I'm surprised that The Familiar was so drastically different in quality!
