This scene with Ruth babysitting her nephew was weird... like she was mean to the kid and made him a gross sandwich and then was surprised when he threw a tantrum and was upset??? I mean, I don't have much kid experience, but his interactions with Tina were weird, and Ruth is an odd one too. The last line says 'Tina left without me'.... but Tina wasn't there to get Ruth or take her anywhere??

I started this two days ago and the thought of coming back to it today had me stressing for no reason. I loved the blurb but I think my interest in young adult fantasy is just not there anymore. Maybe I'll give it another try in the future but for right now, it's a DNF.

I think the book is nuanced. Anyways who’s the worst mother? Kathy, Simone, or Lady?

I think some of the stuff in this is just spot on! “Our waitress with a perky blonde ponytail, definitely a recent transplant from Iowa or Fresno—“ Fresno mention! “—clad head to toe in black polyester” my coworker was just complaining about her plastic plastic polo
But it’s mis-genre-ed and that’s why people hate it. Is there any other books you ever felt were miscategorized? This is not mystery, it’s contemporary!

Wrll, a post COVID book. Do you like the misery of her working a customer service job with a sick mother? Why do you like books like this? A lot of people don’t like COVID books but I’m sure people like it because it is realistic or? I mean I guess the vibes explain why Elenor says the bear is magical not scary, if their worst fear is never moving to the city.
