Whether you love to hate or hate to love 'em, these literary bad girls are anything but well-behaved. *Disclaimer: we do not literally support the illegal and oft cruel behavior of these protagonists (usually); we support the authors bold enough to write them (always).

Fantastic book with a movie coming out in 2027 starring Cynthia Erivo, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Regina King and more. I think this would be a great add! Not sure if yâall wait until the movie has come out before adding books to this quest. Iâm looking forward to watching it though!

Politics and the English Language
George Orwell
Post from the Politics and the English Language forum
Disclaimer, the core claims were provided by my English teacher and are not things I wrote, just things I had to prove using this book and then say if I agreed or disagreed
Core Claim #7: Individuals can resist linguistic corruption
Orwell says that â[...] one can at least change oneâs own habits, and from time to time one can even, if one jeers loudly enough, send some worn-out and useless phrase âsome jackboot, Achillesâ heel, hotbed, melting pot, acid test, veritable inferno, or other lump of verbal refuseâ into the dustbin, where it belongsâ (p. 14) which is his call to action to permanently change the English language to be clear and easy to understand. Orwell is saying that if we become conscious of the choices we are making when we speak then we can better reframe our thoughts and words to be less linguistically corrupt.
I agree with Orwellâs point about how you can change your words and how you use the English language. While difficult, people can change what they say. For instance, many people have a habit of cursing and decide that they no longer think that language is appropriate. While they may still slip up sometimes, they do their best to tone it down and change how they utilize those words. Individuals can definitely change their language, however linguistic corruption is going to happen no matter what. Too many people speak the English language for it to evolve out of its state of corruption. There will always be people who speak the "corrupted" version of the language no matter how much language evolves.
