The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath
Post from the The Bell Jar forum
I know this story is about depression and the main character is the Sylvia Plath’s soul possessed a 19 years old girl but she is depressed in the most annoyingly obnoxious way possible. Self-centred, lacked of empathy, and hypocrites picked me mean girl in the way that reminds me of that one girl I met in life (she’s also has depression). I am unwell in the head myself but this Esther Greenwood is crossing the line from having my sympathies for her mental illness to questioning the process of her brain and how they works. The book describes how good she is but also how not so great she is at the same time, she have no connections to people and always having mean remarks towards everyone—-what did she expect from people? And I read this as a person who’s not from U.S.A., I read The virgin suicide at the same time—-now I just think that there’s a kind of interpretation of melancholic in girlhood that could only be praised for their relatability in the U.S. but frowned upon by other parts of the world.
