    3.75 rounded down for PB.

Wiswell's choices of words are great - I love how he describes so many things without being too plain or too florid, but most of all the way bodies are described throughout this book is a huge highlight. It's written with reverence, decadence, and is just so beautiful to me.

Everything about Shesheshen is wonderful - I am a sucker for an amorphous goo monster; I think Odo Deepspacenine might have something to do with that.

I wanted to rate this higher because I loved the allegory of what this book was about, and I think that's why I haven't rated it LOWER. Because that thread of neurodivergence and monstrousness, alongside a beautiful rendition of one of my favourite academic pieces of writing about monsters in media having the outside-of-society perspective needed to punch through the societal rules we think are immutable or unbreakable. However, at certain points the miscommunication trope dragged on far, far too long, and some of the therapised dialogue came off as less "I am a strange being without the conditioning of humans" and more "I got a good grade in therapy which is normal to want and possible to achieve" that really kept pulling me out of the story. There were two attitudes of conflict resolution that were, ironically, incredibly in conflict with each other in a way that didn't mesh well.

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

loved the story and the horror elements but i really struggled with the prose. i typically vibe well with purple prose, but hazelthorn kind of felt like reading prose that knows what tumblr is. which can be a little brutal sometimes, at least for me. iphone face but for prose, you know what i mean?
