I really liked Yue-ying, but as for the rest? I can't say the same. The mystery at the heart of the story was off to a good start, but the ending just felt rushed and, honestly, left me pretty disappointed. I didn't like Bai Huang from the get-go, but I held on to the hope that things would inevitably get better, only to end up hating him and wishing he were dead by the end of the book. I can't imagine any world in which I could have sincerely rooted for him and his relationship with Yue-ying.

I find Bai Huang so self-absorbed, entitled and self-righteous that I think I might seriously end up wishing he would just disappear or even die by the end of this book...

    Historical romance recs

Hello everyone! I'm coming to you in hopes of finding historical romance novels that tick several, if not all, of my boxes:

    • diverse protagonists (queer, BIPOC, etc.)
    • a political context in which at least one of them is actively involved (women's suffrage, abolition of slavery, etc.)
    • low spice level
    • slow burn romance

To give you a bit more info, historical inaccuracies don't bother me much. I also really appreciate touches of humor here and there and have no objection to romance taking a back seat to the plot. The only book I read that came close to what I was searching for so far was Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore, which I ended up quickly dnf-ing. It gave me feminist × mysoginist vibes and I didn't care for the female protagonist's lack of strong political convictions and the insta-lust. Anyway, if you have any recommendations, please don't hesitate to share them and thank you in advance!

Sadly, I remembered the ending of the film adaptation a little too well, which spoiled several plot twists for me, but I was nevertheless engrossed in Poirot's investigation.
