Okay, I spoke too soon. This has picked up. I am getting really bad vibes from Brooke though. Like... Claire is just a little too... comic book over the top villian and I'm starting to feel intense unreliable narrator vibes from Brooke because of it.
Also, Jenna losing her phone... gives me the vibes that maybe she's unknown caller and passed off her phone to someone else. Idk. I don't think that's it, it feels like a red herring.

With how much I enjoyed "That's Not My Name" I'm really disappointed so far. Like, I'm flying through it, it's a fast read so I'll finish it, but I hope it picks up soon.

I was shocked at how much I loved this book. It really took me by surprise. The writing, solid. The characters, well developed. The relationship progressed in a way that I adore so much, it wasn't sudden. It was in pauses and lurches and I love that for them. All their tragic backstories were nothing specifically unique, but the execution of them was fantastic. How those past shaped what they wanted, how the acted, and what they did felt truly impactful.
Also, as a fanfiction smut enjoyer who often finds standard publication smut lackluster, I was SAT for their smut. Aaaargh. Great book.

My Toxic Tolkien trait? I skip over the songs when reading. I said it & I stand by it, & I’m not sorry.
I don’t even like watching musicals, let alone read songs in a book that wasn’t even adapted into a musical. Also, wasn’t it adapted into a musical??
Anyways, for a significant portion of the book I was questioning whether or not I was enjoying it as I hoped to be. After some research, & realizing that the book was meant for children/teens, I began enjoying it more. Strange how understanding the yintended audience for a novel will change your understanding of the tone, themes, topics, & perspective of it.
