this is pretty much my first ever piece of David Attenborough media (possibly??? i was a nature documentary fiend as a preteen, so it’s possible he narrated something i watched and i didn’t know). and overall i liked it!! loved the general tone of hope for the future. it was very “yes, humanity has done bad things to the ocean. but here is how we can improve, and here are examples of people working to help the ocean”. also really loved the distinction between things like industrial fishing and artisanal fishing, that difference was laid out in a way i hadn’t really seen before that made it easier to understand.

something that did rub me the wrong way was the very consistent emphasis on tourism (+ecotourism) being a benefit of helping the environment. in a vacuum, yes? tourism = more money to tourist hotspots, so from one angle that’s improvement. but from another, that’s a very capitalistic way of looking at helping the environment (“let’s help the environment because ultimately it will be of benefit to us”). maybe i’m a softie, but shouldn’t we be trying to fix environmental problems because it’s a good thing to do? aren’t there bigger systems we need to tackle so that people can live without having to worry about lack of money? it just felt gross to constantly have that emphasis on “saving the environment will bring money”.

    Diversity among authors

I wanted to check if there was diversity among the authors of the books I've read since the beginning of the year. 80% are not cisgender male authors! However, there are clearly not enough non white people (25%) or disabled persons (it's harder to determine). Do you check your diversity ? Do you have other diversity check? Like queer people maybe ? I will try to do better so if you have recommendations, I'm here!
