I've played basketball with the Dalai Lama and his crew. Maybe it was just his crew. He was there though.

Shen Tao has masterfully written a bloodbath wrapped in silk and chiffon. Fantasy has conditioned us to expect our protagonists to rehabilitate toxic men back into society. Tao rejects this. And you know how? Wei doesn't try to fix her prince.

The ending that everyone's talking about? I loved it!!! It is the only befitting conclusion for a story grounded in a harsh reality. It honors Wei's agency and the horrific, horrific choices she has had to make to survive and fix the famine.

Shen Tao refused to sell for a cheap, crowd-pleasing cliched ending, and in my mind, she is a WINNER!

(P.S. Read trigger warnings, forget everything you know about the standard fantasy tropes and read this masterpiece already.)
