What a compelling historical fiction/fantasy — the world was rich and immersive, and the characters all felt like real people. This book felt like longing personified, a multifaceted dissection of individual yearning and of identity within that yearning. The story was dynamic and heartfelt, full of all kinds of tragedy and wit, and it left me not knowing exactly how it was going to end until the last few pages (or minutes, in my case).
For audiobook listeners: it was a bit hard for me to tell the difference between some of the POVs at first, but I was able to pretty quickly catch on to the subtle differences the narrator used in tone/voice. Besides that, the narrator did an amazing job!!
