I’m definitely feeling the summerween vibes because I wanted to pick up something witchy and this did the trick! Deals with the devil, ghosts, and more spooky aspects helped scratch that "it’s almost fall" itch. This one definitely grew on me the longer I read it. The characters aren’t particularly likable in the beginning which made it a bit of a slow start, but over the course of the story they slowly charmed me until I was 100% in their corner. I especially liked watching the relationship between David and Moira grow, they were too sweet. However, I didn’t care much for Rhys. I found his motivations to be mostly self-centered and he tended to act in the extremes. Honestly this could probably be said for the other two characters as well, so I’m not sure why he rubbed me the wrong way in particular. I did immediately pick up book 2, which is centered on his story, and I’m actually really excited to get a deeper look into his head.

Such a mixed bag of feelings on this book like?? I liked it?? But also had a problem finishing it?? It was a struggle to pick it to read/continue, but I'd knock off 15-20% easy every time. I was annoyed with a lot of things about it but not enough to DNF. I was intrigued enough to keep going every time. There's such a big disconnect with the book's themes and what it wants to be. At least, from the way I was consuming it. Like, I know it's not YA but I honestly struggled to keep reminding myself of that — that these are adult, horny college royals. The silly, fun references kept throwing me off what seriousness the story was trying to lay down. It was just a struggle for me and I can't help but think if it's because of my own expectations out of the book, because I honestly still enjoyed it. Even cried at all the right places. I understand the motivations and shit, but maybe not enough of royal politics. Anyway, even through all that, I can't say I liked the ending much. I get it, it's a segue to Kris' story but the final chapter doesn't leave a feeling of finality to it. Not that a chapter cut would've been better, I do hate ending on a big romantic act and nothing after. I'll definitely pick up Kris' book but maybe in a few weeks or months.

I recently heard about this and I am intrigued. I really want to read some. And honestly, it makes sense that it’s a thing. I feel like I’d love it because I adore the Cloverfield movies and those feel like they apply to the genre. Problem is that I have no idea where to start. I tried seeing if someone made a list and there isn’t one so I’d love to hear some recommendations (also if anyone does create a list, please let me know!)

Unfortunately this one was not really for me. VE Schwabs writing is absolutely beautiful and pretty much the only reason this was a 3 star in the end. It’s over 500 pages of a character study of 3 different women (who become vampires). There were definitely engaging moments, but overall I found myself to be pretty bored and unmotivated to continue reading. It’s so interesting to me that I loved Addie LaRue but didn’t care much for this one. I think part of the problem is that with Addie, we had a central character to focus on, instead of 3 characters whose connections don’t become clear until much later on in the story. We don’t even get the 3rd woman’s POV until about halfway through (and that’s over 250 pages in this case)! I fear there was simply not enough direction and not enough plot to keep me engaged. The women also, while interesting, were not terribly likeable, which didn’t help their case. Honestly, I found the end to be disappointing as well. We finally get the confluence of all 3 women, but the villain is vanquished with barely a whisper, and the plot twist was fairly predictable. I’ll keep picking up VE Schwabs books, but I probably wouldn’t grab another of the same type by her again.

I have been going through my recently read books from this year and last year and it's primarily white authors. Even my TBR list is primarily white authors. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all those books and excited to read my TBR. However, I would really love to support more BIPOC/POC authors, as I myself am Mexican. Specially with so many of our voices trying to be silenced even more as of the last few months (yes I live in the US 🥲). Please recommend me either your favorite authors or books written by BIPOC/POC! ❤️

Curious to know what the first book of the month is for everyone! For me, it's Winterlight by Kristen Britain. The end of my reread is nigh!

Who else has banned themselves from buying new books because of their substantial physical tbr and who else is quite bad at upholding that ban haha I've become very aware of over consumerism over the last couple of years and am trying to adjust my bad habits but sometimes I can't help but grab a new book every once and a while

"Their government was corrupt and ineffective after generations of catering to all those oligarchs and trillionaires, and might not send anyone to help even if they could". Hmmmm, sounds familiar.
