I was so impressed by the way that this story progressed. I kept expecting the plot to slow down, but it was one twist after another and I was engaged the entire time. The characters were incredibly well-written and the plot was extremely intricate.

I’ve read a few fantasy books where the story takes place over a very short period of time—10 days, a single prolonged battle, etc—but I was still a bit dubious going into this book about how the entire story could take place over the course of a single night. Thus far, however, I have only been impressed with it. The setting and the night itself already lent itself to intrigue, but I think the most compelling part of this story is the tension that has been steadily building, page by page. I am constantly on the edge of my seat, which means that I don’t want any major time skips; I want the next moment, the heartbeat after this one. Overall, I’m very impressed with the writing.

I think that having two authors who co-created an entire fantasy world and both write in it is such a neat, wonderful thing. I’m really looking forward to reading Esslemont’s take on this world and seeing how it differs from Erikson’s, while hopefully also keeping the characterization consistent. Also, I am delighted to be going back in time a bit in the Malazan Empire’s history.
