This is the first genuinely scary book I've read; I even had nightmares about it last night. I finally understand why Joey from Friends had to put his copy in the freezer 😭

I wanted to stew on this book for a few days before I gave it a review. It's been five days since I've finished it and it's already had a positive impact on not only my life, but by helping me to understand the people in my life. It's not an easy read, and can be pretty technically and emotionally heavy in parts, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the field, who has been through trauma, who is a regular at therapy, or might be considering it.
While talking about patient experiences there are a few triggering stories that are told, so I guess keep that in mind.

"When I give presentations on trauma and trauma treatment, participants sometimes ask me to leave out the politics and confined myself to talking about neuroscience and therapy. I wish I could separate trauma from politics, but as long as we continue to live in denial and treat only trauma while ignoring its origins, we are bound to fail."
"Trauma breeds further trauma; hurt people hurt other people."
"As the ACE study has shown, child abuse and neglect is the single most preventable cause of mental illness, the single most common cause of drug and alcohol abuse, and a significant contributor to leading cause of death such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and suicide."

Dramatic battles, tense political intrigue, unique world building...and is that maybe some romance I'm sensing? These books are not Romantasy but focus primarily on the SFF elements. Romance is a subplot and may not appear until later in the series, but when it does, you won't be disappointed.
