This is a book I've seen on Scariest books and therefore I requested from the library to find out if that was true. There were moments of tensions but I continued to be too jaded to be scared. It is a scary concept.

There is a lot of fatphobia in this book. The protagonist Jack is incredibly annoying with it, which is funny because he's complaining about how annoying the fat character is. He is a bit unsufferable at times. I do think the letter does reduce the tension a bit. Maybe if the names were more up in the air, then wouldn't spend the book knowing that character makes it out.

I like the diary format for the most part. I think this a book worth checking out and I'm going to check out the author's other works. At least the ones the library has on audiobook. Maybe, Maybe just maybe a book will scare me again someday.

    Or not.

    🥀

The romance is probably the weakest part because there's a lack of communication going on between all the characters. I believe there could be tension, there's just a lot of declaring emotions. Possible when you jump around character's heads in third person.

This clearly based on Scotland and its mostly. There were few things I found distracting e.g. there being a "city" on a island. It's done okay. I also thought it was unrealistic that no one else on this island knows how to play an instrument and no one signs. So much of our culture is music and its strange for any culture to not have a form of active music. It they don't, there's a reason not to. The fae have a music culture. I believe that no one else plays the harp.

The audiobook has a Scottish voice actor which is great. Non-matching voice actor can take you out of the book. This is inspired by Scotland vs actually staking into a ground so I'm willing to let most of the things that took me out of the story go and frankly, I have read contemporaries that are worse. The fact nothing straight up offensive happened. Though, the name choices aren't that Scottish. Like Jack being called Jack since childhood when Scottish people don't believe in the letter J (okay, that's sort of joke. His name should be Iain. Just realise she named the main character Jock. Maybe this is offensive or she didn't research that fair. I have decided not to care because I go down enough rabbit holes in my daily life.

I'm half interested where this goes, and since it only one more book, I will probably listened to it. I am at the point where series tend to annoy me because I've been burnt before and so many should have just been one book. This book was already at 14 hours so a chance it will be justified.

Is Saturday by Ian McEwan actually good rec off this book?

The audiobook on Libby is just straight rip of the cds (horrifying where the cd breaks are) and it says to read that book if you enjoy this one and I'm just curious if that was just marketing buzz.

It also has ad read for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. I've never came across an ad read in audiobook before. Usually just a pitch for the company e.g. our category can be found online or please call us to receive one. I've read older Recorded books before.
