At maybe ten years old, I was Dylan Thomas. Not because I wanted to rob a bank, of course, but because I absolutely loved crime movies and acted them out with my Barbies. So after reading the blurb, I knew I had to pick this one up.

Sadly, the book didn’t quite meet my expectations. I was expecting an action-packed story about a boy on a daring mission. Instead, it’s much quieter and more character-driven. Dylan spends a lot of time in his own head, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it wasn’t the story I thought I was getting.

The last forty pages, however, were much closer to what I had hoped for. They finally delivered some of the tension and excitement I had been missing throughout most of the book.

So don’t go into this expecting a child-friendly version of The Godfather (although I really enjoyed all the movie references). It’s much more of a grounded story about an ordinary boy trying to accomplish something extraordinary in an otherwise very ordinary world.

The ending was incredibly sweet, and overall it’s a genuinely cute story. My disappointment mostly came from my own expectations. If you’re looking for a heartfelt story about a boy who wants to help the girl he cares about, this might be the perfect book for you.

One aspect I ‘appreciated’ was how the book handles poverty and Dylan’s father’s depression. Dylan doesn’t ignore these things, but he also doesn’t dwell on them. They’re simply part of his everyday life, and his emotional distance felt believable for a child. For him, this is just life. It’s a really sad way to cope, but also a realistic one. I don’t know if it’s something that a kid would pick up, but for me it was a sad layer to his story.

Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik deze klassieker nog niet kende voordat ik de graphic novel langs zag komen. Ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat ik, voordat ik het boek opensloeg, vrijwel niks wist van het verhaal. Ik zag enkel dat de vertaling naar beeld gedaan was door Aimée de Jongh en dan weet ik direct dat ik het moet kopen. Eerder maakte Aimée namelijk de graphic novel De terugkeer van de wespendief en man, wat een aanrader is dat!

Maar terugkomend op dit boek. Ik snap helemaal dat dit een klassieker is. Het tikt zulke intrinsieke thema’s aan. De eerste paar bladzijdes dacht ik dat het enkel zou gaan over een groepje jongens op een onbewoond eiland. Een soort Madagaskar (de film) met mensen. Maar na het dichtslaan van het boek, heb ik echt even moeten nadenken hierover. Het gaat over de kern van de mens en hoe die kan omslaan in ‘goed’ en ‘slecht’, maar ook wat er van een samenleving overblijft als je het zelf moet creëren. Heel erg interessant.

De art is prachtig. Ik ben echt door het boek heen gevlogen terwijl ik tegelijkertijd ook elke tekening volledig in mij op wilde nemen. Dat is hoe Aimée dat doet en ik ben zo’n fan. Prachtig!

Ik weet niet of ik het origineel ooit ga oppakken. Ergens denk ik dat de graphic novel voor mij de perfecte vorm is om dit verhaal te nuttigen. Misschien ooit, maar voor nu denk ik dat ik nog een paar keer dit boek zal opslaan. Want poeh… wat een verhaal.
